Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning the DownStem

The most stubborn and greasy residue is found at the bottom of the bowl. Therefore, special attention should be given to this part while cleaning. To remove the thick layer of residue, it is better to scratch it using a paper clip or any tool available to you.

Step 1 - Rinse Everything with Warm Water

Before proceeding to clean the stem and bowl, it should be rinsed with warm water. Let the water run into the stem and bowl to ensure it is completely washed.

Step 2 - Place the Stem in Ziploc Bag

Considering the size of the stem, take a Ziploc bag. The bag should be big enough to hold the stem and still should have space to allow the solution to float in it. Using a Ziploc bag is necessary because a stem cant take the water as the pipe does. It should always be washed separately for better results.

Step 3 - Add Alcohol and Salt Solution to Ziploc Bag

We need to add alcohol and salt in 2:1. You can also use ¼ cup of salt and about two cups of alcohol. Sea salt is taken as an abrasive as it gives top-notch results. Nevertheless, table salt can also be used as it gives pretty good results. Add the stem to the Ziploc bag. Make sure the stem is completely submerged in the solution

Step 4 - Shake Vigorously

Here comes the fun part; shaking. Once everything is inside the Ziploc bag, zip it properly and start shaking it. Once done, keep it on the table for an hour or so. Slosh and shake the bag after a while to make the stem free from residues and dirt. During shaking, you need to be very careful not to put a lot of force. This may break the zip or have it burst open. If the stem is very greasy, you may need to soak it for more than an hour.

Step 5 - Rinse the Stem

Once you see the grease is completely separated from the stem, know that it's time to take it out of the Ziploc bag. Pour out the solution and separate the stem. Wash it under clean water and let it dry. Using hot water in this step ensures the stem is free from all the greasy dirt. You are left with a clean bubbler at this point. Before using it again, ensure it is completely dry. Even a little moisture can prove bad for the quality of smoke. Moisture allows mold growth and the development of unpleasant smells.
